Name Change Procedure — Newspaper Ad Requirements
Complete guide to changing your name legally. Newspaper ad format, affidavit, and gazette notification explained.
The name change process in India has three distinct steps — affidavit, newspaper publication, and gazette notification. The newspaper ad is the most time-sensitive step.
Step 1: Notarised Affidavit
Prepare a notarised affidavit clearly stating your old name, new name, father's name, and reason for change. The affidavit must be on stamp paper.
Step 2: Newspaper Publication
Publish the name-change notice in at least two newspapers — one English and one regional. Typical format:
- "I, [OLD NAME], S/o / D/o [FATHER'S NAME], resident of [ADDRESS], have changed my name to [NEW NAME]. Henceforth I shall be known as [NEW NAME] for all purposes."
- Publish in English daily + regional daily
- Keep tear sheets for gazette submission
Step 3: Gazette Notification
Submit the affidavit and newspaper cuttings to the Department of Publication, Government of India, for gazette notification.
